Play music on Bluetooth speakers or headphones
Stream music that plays on your Google Nest or Home speaker or display to your favorite Bluetooth speakers or headphones.
Note: All media playback will play on the external speaker that's paired with the Google Nest or Home device. Alarms, timers and Google Assistant's responses will play on your Google Nest or Home device.
Step 1. Pair and connect a Bluetooth speaker and Google Nest or Home device
Complete these steps if it's the first time you're connecting your speaker to your Google Nest or Home device.
- Turn on your Bluetooth speaker and make sure it's in pairing mode. Press the pairing button on your Bluetooth speaker, if possible.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Make sure you're in the right home. The name of the home is at the top of the screen. To change homes, tap the arrow next to the home name.
- Touch and hold your device's tile.
- At the top right, tap Settings Audio.
- TapDefault music speaker Pair Bluetooth speaker. Your Google Nest or Home device will then scan for Bluetooth devices.
- Tap the Bluetooth device once it appears on the screen Done.
- Your Bluetooth device will now pair with your Google Nest or Home device.
Tips to pair and connect devices
- You can only have one connected Bluetooth speaker or headphones to play music through at a time.
- Once you pair and connect your Bluetooth speaker to a Google Nest or Home device, it will auto-connect unless the speaker gets disconnected or turned off.
- You can pair a Google Nest or Home device to multiple Bluetooth enabled speakers or headphones, but it will only connect to the most recently connected device.
- Check which mobile devices are connected to your Google Nest or Home device.
Step 2. Play music
Once your Bluetooth speaker is paired and connected to your Google Nest or Home device, use basic and advanced music commands to listen to music and playlists.
Using audio groups
If you use speaker groups to listen to media like music, podcasts and audiobooks from multiple speakers at once, you can continue to do that with your Bluetooth speaker. Just add the Google Nest or Home device that's connected to the Bluetooth speaker to any speaker group. Learn how to create or add your speaker to an audio group.
Note: You may need to adjust for the playback delay that can happen when you use a Bluetooth device. Learn how to correct group playback delay.
Disconnect Bluetooth speaker and Google Nest or Home device
You can disconnect a Bluetooth speaker from a Google Nest or Home device but leave it paired.
Using the Google Home app
Using your voice
Say "Hey Google, disconnect Bluetooth."
Note: Your Bluetooth speaker will stay connected to the Google Nest or Home device until you disconnect.
Reconnect a Bluetooth speaker and Google Nest or Home device
Once you pair and connect your Bluetooth speaker to a Google Nest or Home device using the steps above, the Google Nest or Home device will automatically reconnect unless the Bluetooth speaker gets disconnected or turned off.
If your Bluetooth speaker doesn't auto-connect, complete these steps:
Using the Google Home app
Using your voice
- Make sure your Bluetooth speaker is on (or in a state to accept connections).
- Say "Hey Google, connect Bluetooth."
Unpair a speaker and Google Nest or Home device
This will remove your Bluetooth speaker from the paired device list. You'll need to pair and connect this speaker to use it again.
- Open the Google Home app.
- Touch and hold the Google Nest or Home device you want to unpair.
- At the top right, tap Settings Audio Paired Bluetooth devices.

Tap the X next to the device you want to unpair Unpair.
Fix a problem
My Bluetooth speaker is connected but audio isn't playing
If your Bluetooth speaker is fully paired and connected but there's still no audio, try these steps:
Step 1. Check the volume of your devices
- Bluetooth speaker
- Google Nest or Home device
- By voice: To adjust the volume, say "Hey Google, turn it up"
Step 2. Reconnect your devices
- Unpair devices
- Pair and connect
