From HK to Canada: can we bring back beef jerky?
Hey there,
Currently travelling in Hong Kong and bought a bag of dried, packaged (vacuum sealed) beef jerky. I'm wondering if Canadian customs will give me problems for this? We will declare it, however, would like to know if there is a chance they will confiscate it.
Thanks in advance!

YMMV - depends on whether the agent you're dealing with is feeling hungry and likes beef jerky.
But seriously though - they probably won't care if it's processed (which beef jerky definitely is) and in small quantities for personal consumption. But it's still definitely YMMV. The regulations (as published on various Canadian giovernment websites) are vague at best and subject to interpretation.
But since you've already bought it, you've got nothing to lose by trying to bring it across. And as long as you make a full declaration.

my relative brought back beef jerky and had to throw it out.
You could just lie on the paper and the agent by telling them you didn't bring back any meat, but i wouldn't risk it

Beef jerky isn't allowed to be brought back into Canada. In the customs declaration form they give you on the flight into Canada it's listed there under dried meats or something like that. You're also not allowed to bring back dried fruits. I had both, not knowing that it wasn't allowed. If your bag is searched then you'll have to throw it out. Oh well.
I'm guessing that you're bringing back beef and/or pork jerky from Macau. For what it's worth, jerky from Macau doesn't taste the same as say from ten years ago. It's like a lower quality meat they use now.

The reason that meat is not allowed is because they may contain contagious diseases such as mad cow disease or foot mouth disease. Is it worth it?

Penalties range from them throwing it out to a monetary fine. A co-worker of mine was fined roughly $500 for intentionally bringing back non-permitted items and for not declaring it. I once brought back two sticks of cigarettes, declared it, but the customs agent didn't stop me nor charged me tax on the excess item.

NO it's not allowed. We didn't know before and once brought beef jerky back from Asia, and had to throw them out at customs here. Now we know.
You can still bring onto the airplane, to eat inflight.

Once you declare, they are going to pull you in and search everything.

Coming from the USA and properly packaged with country of origin, I don't think it would be a problem (from personal experience)...from Asia, I certainly wouldn't risk it.
If you declare you have food items, they don't automatically search your possessions...they'll ask what you are bringing in and if it's all permitted, they just let you through. They are pretty good at sensing if you are telling the truth.

Just eat it all on the airplane. There's nothing like a beef-jerky-fest 30000ft up!

Certainly according to the link its okay from the States. We had biltong confiscated coming back from S. Africa (which we had declared). I never realized the rules were different from the US vs. other countries.

Nope. I don't think there's ever punishment for declared items.

Just finished my package of Bee Cheng Hiang (Singapore style jerky ) which someone gave me in Singapore. I just placed the package in my check-in and didn't declared it.
Custom had opened my bag but didn't removed the jerky. My brother was on the same flight and he had no problems with the jerky in his check-in.
This was Pearson airport, I think Vancouver airport might be more restrict.
My brother and me got thru, but it's YMMV.
